Art of Dance India aims to educate performing artists and art enthusiasts about the spiritual, philosophical and historical connections between Indian art and Indian classical dance.

In the Indian aesthetics tradition, the feeling or mood that results when an art form touches one's soul is known as rasa. Performing and visual artists have used similar time-tested techniques to produce this artistic and spiritual enlightenment in their spectators. Historically, Indian classical dancers have looked to visual art to further inspire their art form, while sculptors and painters have turned to performing artistes for just the same. For this reason and others, sculptures and paintings in ancient and medieval Hindu temples uncover lost traditions in Indian classical dancing, and friezes and frescoes of dancing women reveal a multi-layered performing arts history in the Indian region.

Art of Dance India was conceived and established in 2005 by Vani Lakshmi Krishnamurthy, an Indian art historian and classical dancer. Vani gained her expertise through twenty years of dancing and performing, as well as through field research as a Fulbright Scholar to India. She currently lectures, performs, and leads workshops at arts and educational institutions.
